Debate over ISP-level internet filtering is continuing as we head towards the August 21 federal election, and in the interests of safeguarding children from the ‘worst of the worst’ material on the internet it is important that we build on the community’s understanding of the need for this initiative.
In that vein, ACL Managing Director Jim Wallace has written an opinion piece entitled ‘Internet filter puts the common good first’ which has appeared in today’s National Times (Fairfax online opinion).

In the lead up to the federal election a group of over 20 Christian leaders have drafted The Canberra Declaration – a document which was officially launched on the lawns of Parliament House on Friday July 23.
The Canberra Declaration follows on from the 2009 Manhattan Declaration and the 2010 Westminster Declaration. It declares that when Christian values are respected and allowed freedom of expression, not just confined to so-called sacred spaces but in the public arena as well, society is richer and healthier.

In a sign of growing dirty tactics in the Federal election campaign the Australian Sex Party yesterday made an under-handed attempt to discredit the Family First political party by claiming that Family First tried to make a preference deal with them.
Family First’s Federal Chairman Bob Day yesterday strongly denied reports of the party entering a preference arrangement with the Australian Sex Party, saying “I want to reassure you that this is completely false. I am the Federal Chairman and no preference arrangement can occur without my approval.”

The appalling news that a mother has been charged with sending her 16-year-old daughter to work as a prostitute at a brothel in Sydney’s eastern suburbs raises serious questions not only about the depths society is sinking to, but also the role of the brothel in this issue. Please click here to read more details about this issue in The Australian.
ACL asks what action has been taken to investigate the brothel over allegedly allowing an underage girl to work there? Have there been other incidents of this happening at the brothel and surely consideration should be given to closing it down?
