Nicholas Tuohy, an ordained Baptist minister asks of The Age’s campaign against Christian Religious Education (CRE) in schools and chaplaincy, “are there not more pressing needs to protect our children from?”
Writing for On Line Opinion, he writes:
“I think Australians are largely fearful of religion. That’s why no one talks about it and media campaigns like The Age are always trying to sideline religion or make it out to be some sinister and suspicious practice we need to protect our children from. Like it or not, our very education system comes out of the Christian heritage of Western nations.”

Absolutely correct!
It is the church that first promoted education for everyone and fostered medical care for all the sick.
Is our present Western generation (including the “Age” owners, editors and journalists) totally and utterly incapable of learning lessons of history?
Excluding God’s love from childrens’ lives in schools opens the door to selfish disregard of others, the pursuit of self centred ends that untimately destroys family and community quality of life.
The “Age” regretably promotes ‘I can do as I like life style’ by debunking God’s involvement in all family and community issues.
What do we expect but break down in relationships and misery for families.
How about such children’s rights when they usually become victims for life.
We urgently need the education system (and the media at large) to promote a few ‘R’s Responsibility, Restraint and (committed) Relationship for starters.
History demonstates God’s love when adhered to produces a wonderful quality of life.
We are in the process of having this completely undermined and stolen from us.
I agree with Daniel Tuohy , that there are far more important matters for the Age to be focussed on with children in schools, than RE. Obesity, pornography and other matters are swamping our schools. Any matter of concern in the community becomes something more that is added to the school curriculum. So they have Bike week, Jump for Heart, Multiple Schlerosis Readathon and the list goes on and on. When can the teachers get any chance to teach? When I was going into school for RE , I found that we were often pushed out to the perimeters because a new drama group had come to town, or there was some festival that they had to prepare for, when it should only have involved their parents taking them to a fun time at the weekend.
Christianity is the basis of our society. It is safe and teaches children about to manage their lives. What else is availble to do this? Parents may not be in a position to do it, being too busy manageing their mortgages and provideing for their families. My view is don’t knock it as there is no doubt it is a good thing for the community as well as all concerned
